Part 2:

Hill of Difficulty:

Suddenly to the left of him to strangers jumped over the wall and came at him a pace. The name of the one was Formalist and the name of the other Hypocrisy. “Gentleman”, asked Christian, “where have you come from and where are you going?”

“Well, we were born in the land of Vainglory and are bound for the Celestial city.”

“Then why did you jump over the wall instead of coming through the wicket-gate?”

“It’s too roundabout a way”, they said, “Our countrymen always take this shortcut. Well, they’ve been doing it for hundreds of years so it can’t be wrong!” Christian was dismayed, “But it’s breaking the rules of the journey!” “What’s does it matter how we did it?”, they said, “if we’re in we’re in! ha ha ha ..” and they went on their way laughing.

Mathew 6:5:

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Mathew 23:1-4:

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

Formalist chose to go to the left which led him into a dark wood did he but know it the road was called danger and he lost his way forever. Hypocrisy chose to go to the right which led him into rough ground full of holes and hammocks did he but know it the road was called destruction here he stumbled and fell and rose no more. Christian paused and drank at a spring to refresh himself then he started briskly straight on up the hill.

Proverbs 14:12:

There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death.

Jeremiah 13:16:

Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings the darkness, before your feet stumble on the darkening hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it to utter darkness and change it to deep gloom.

Isaiah 49:10:

They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.

Then just as he was about to give up, he came upon a Pleasant Arbour which had been made by the Lord of the hill for the refreshment of weary travellers. Here in the deep grass Christian gratefully lay down. He pulled out the parchment which the angel had given him and read it for his comfort. In the drowsy warmth of the afternoon sun he fell asleep.

When he awoke it was late evening so he quickly rose up and hastened on his way. Then coming towards him he heard the sound of running feet and out of the twilight two men appeared the name of the one was Timorous and of the other Mistrust. “Sirs what’s the matter?” asked Christian. Timorous answered, “The further we go the more danger we meet.” “Yes”, said Mistrust, “for just ahead there lie two lions whether awake or asleep we know not, but if we come within reach of them, they could easily pull us to pieces”. So, saying Timorous and Mistrust ran on down the hill.

John 12:35:

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.

Luke 9:23-26:

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Philippians 3:12-14:

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

There was still light enough to read his parchment and this is what he read, “DESIRE NOW A BETTER COUNTRY THAT IS THE HEAVENLY ONE.”  and with these words to strengthen him Christian resumed his climb

Lamentations 3:21-27:

21 Yet this I call to mind
    and therefore I have hope:

22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
    for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”

25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
    to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
    while he is young.

Hebrews 11:15-17:

15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Christian resumed his climb and lifting up his eyes he saw against the sky the towers of a stately palace, the palace beautiful

Psalm 48:1-3:

Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise,
in the city of our God, his holy mountain.

Beautiful in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon
is Mount Zion,
the city of the Great King.
God is in her citadels;
he has shown himself to be her fortress.

Christian was never so near to running back after them but the porter at the lodge whose name was Watchful perceiving now that Christian made a halt cried out, “Fear not the Lions, they’re on long chains. If you keep strictly to the beam of light in the centre of the path they cannot reach you.”

 Psalm 27:1-4:

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.

Mathew 10:26-30:

So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Isaiah 62:6:

I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest.

Then to his relief she said, “we have to be careful here whom we admit but this house was built by the Lord of the hill for the benefit of pilgrims, so with the Lord’s blessing come in.”

Ephesians 2:11-22:

11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

The armoury was full of curious weapons from the past they showed him Moses rod and the jawbone of an ass which Samson used against the Philistines and the sling and stone which David used to slay Goliath. They fitted Christian out with the Armour which their Lord provided for the use of travellers that they might stand their ground when things were at their worst.

Ephesians 6:10-17:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full Armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full Armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Battle with Apollyon

“I am the enemy of this King. I hate his person, his laws and his people. Give him the slip and work for me and your wages shall be doubled”, said Apollyon.

But Christian knew that this was not the way to save his life. “The wages that you give are not such as a man can live on! They are the wages of death!”

1 Peter 5:8-11:

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Mathew 4:1-11:

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

In spite of his new armour Christian was wounded in the head the hand the foot and forced to yield ground

Isaiah 53:5:

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

But at that moment Christian cried, “rejoice not yet against me oh mine enemy, when I fall I shall arise.” and Christian nimbly stretched his hand out for his sword and caught it up and ran Apollyon through.

Micah 7:8:

Do not gloat over me, my enemy!
Though I have fallen, I will rise.
Though I sit in darkness,
the Lord will be my light.

Hebrews 4:12:

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

So in his mercy God directed him towards a certain tree the tree of life, the leaves of which he now applied to all his wounds and rapidly they stopped the flow of blood then thanking God for his deliverance Christian went forward to the valleys.

Revelation 22:1,2:

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
