The Pilgrim’s Progress:
In the late 1600’s, a poor pots and pans salesman named John Bunyan was imprisoned and while he was there, he started to write one of the most famous books in the English language – The Pilgrim’s Progress.The book is a symbolic vision of the good man’s journey through life.

Part 1:
“I dreamed”, he says “I saw a man with a book in his hand and a great burden on his back as he read the book he began to weep.
Then in a lamentable voice he cried out, “What shall I do to be saved?” for he lived in the city of destruction which he learned from his book was doomed to be burnt with fire from heaven and everyone who lived there would perish in the flames.
Burden:
Psalm 38:3,4:
3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.4 My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.
City of Destruction:
Genesis 19:15-25:
15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”
16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”
18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords,please! 19 Your servant has found favour in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. 20 Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”
21 He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. 22 But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar)
23 By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
What must I do to be saved?
Acts 16:29-31:
29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
Evangelist:
Then Evangelist pointed with his finger across the plain, “do you see yonder the wicket-gate?” he asked. “No”, said Christian.
“Then, do you see a shining light?”
He said, “I think I do!”
Then said Evangelist, “Keep that light in your eye and go in that direction so you shall reach the gate.Then when you knock you’ll be told what to do without delay.”
Acts 21:8:
Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven.
Acts 8:4-6:
4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said.

Obstinate:
“I will be no company to such fantastical fellows ! I’ll go back to my own house.”
Exodus 7:8-13:
8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.”
10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.
Slough of Despond:
As they were talking together they had drawn near to a miry slough which was called the slough of despond. It was a place where many travellers before them had been drowned and not looking where they were going they’ve all suddenly fell into the bog
Pliable being unburdened managed in the end to scramble back but he was very angry! “Is this the happiness you promised me?”, he asked. “If we have such trouble at the start what may be expected at the finish?”and he ran off home for a hot bath.
Mark 14:29,66-72:
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
Mr. Worldly Wiseman:
Mr. Worldly Wiseman was the next to meet him, a very inquisitive and self-important gentleman who dwelt in the town of carnal policy.
“Moreover there are houses standing empty in the village at reasonable rents. The food is cheap and good and you can send it for your wife and children and all live happily together.”
Acts 8:18-21:
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
Mr. Legality:
Christian shouldn’t have listened to him for what he had failed to tell him was that the hill ahead was a fearsome mountain. It towered above you as if about to crush him.There were flashes of fire coming out of it and Christian because of his burden might easily have fallen and thus early on his journey have been burnt to death
Luke 18:9-14:
9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Simple, Sloth, Presumption:
Simple naïvely answered, “I do not see any danger.” Sloth mumbled, “Just let me have a little more sleep.” Then Presumption proudly asserted, “Every tub must stand upon its own bottom so what else need I say?
Romans 13:11:
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
1 Peter 5:8:
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Goodwill:

He found himself beneath a wayside cross and as its shadow fell across him, so suddenly the burden slipping from off his shoulder

Colossians 2:13-15:
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
